Lithium-ion Batteries Part One - Li-ion Batteries Can Damage Easily

The Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery is an actual powerhouse that packs a punch very much out of proportion to its size. What goes on inside the battery itself is very high, active electronics and chemistry, otherwise known as internal high resistance. The battery is very safe to handle and use but it is important for the end-user to know what they are working with. This new technology offers some of the most efficient portable power, but it needs to be handled with care.

One of the biggest challenges with the Li-ion battery is its actual “fragileness”, if I can use this as a word. It is not frail or weak, but If dropped or hit, the battery can short-circuit and possibly cause fire or explosion. When the batteries go unsupervised such as inside checked luggage, they need to be properly insulated from each other and properly padded to avoid impact. That is why so much care is being taken to see they are handled with special care during passenger plane travel.

The manufacturers of these batteries go to great lengths to make sure the Li-ion battery cells stay self-contained inside a battery pack. Single cells of this type of battery are not available for purchase. The battery packs are constructed to isolate the battery leads from exposure under excessive current. This prevents the battery from becoming damaged and makes it safer to use.

There have been some mishaps involving Lithium-ion batteries that present clear danger. However, when we learn the strengths and weaknesses of the Li-ion battery we will be able to benefit from their technology. In this battery age we need to become armed with facts about the types of power we are handling.
