On January 15, 2008 The Wall Street Journal reported on how China’s labor force is suffering gravely from manufacturing cadmium batteries for Chinese-made toys. Millions of American children received these toys last Christmas.

Although safe to use, cadmium batteries are dangerous to make. The people who actually handle them and breathe the red cadmium dust are slowly becoming terminally ill.

But what can we say? The batteries are cheap. Their mark-down saves, according to The Wall Street Journal, $1.50 per average toy, compared to those with pricier batteries.

A worker in Southern China, Ms. Wang Fengping, has worked for years in plant where cadmium batteries are made for Mattel, Inc., Toys “R” Us and Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. The Wall Street Journal reported that ‘hundreds of Ms. Wang’s colleagues also regularly inhale the toxic red cadmium dust that filled the air in the plant.’ It goes on to say that about 400 other workers at the same place Ms. Wang worked have been found to have unsafe levels of cadmium in their systems. She and these workers were employed by Hong Kong-based GP Batteries International Ltd.

Cadmium is a toxic metal such as mercury and lead. They can cause kidney failure, lung cancer and bone disease. Currently Ms. Wang is often too weak to walk and her kidneys have failed. Her doctors have identified her problems to be most likely caused by the cadmium poisoning.

The manufacturing of Nickel-Cadmium or NiCD batteries demonstrate this new method of searching for cheaper production which usually means migrating labor to countries with fewer safety standards and protections.

If you are interested in reading more on this Wall Street Journal Report please check this out:
Toxic Factories Take Toll On China’s Labor Force - By Jane Spencer and Juliet Ye, January 15, 2008; Page A1

The new Nickel Metal-Hydride batteries (NiMH) are safer to make and do not have the heavy metals of older technology. They are not designed to power the same types of devices as are nickel-cadmium batteries, however, we are seeing newer technology make battery manufacturing safer. Perhaps we need to switch to Lithium-ion batteries and forget about Nickel-Cadmium (NiCD) batteries all together. It’s happening already. Power drills and many other devices needing torque in their operation are now being powered by Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries.

We want to thank Ms. Spencer and Ms. Ye for their report. It helps to know what our cheap batteries really cost.

We still have needs for Nickel-Cadmium batteries but there is great change happening literally monthly. We can do better and we will.

Low Discharge NiMH AA and AAA Rechargeable Batteries - We are offering three brands right now that pass our qualifications: Sanyo Eneloop, Maha Imedion, and AccuPower AccuLoop. These batteries are top quality NiMH Low Discharge rechargeables.

Do not let the lower capacity numbers throw you off! These batteries contain the same capacity for practical purposes because the power is discharged slower and lasts longer. They are fantastic with high drain devices such as digital cameras. There are a couple of things that make these batteries unique and desirable:

1) These Low Discharge NiMH Batteries are charged when you buy them, so they do not need to be charged up before you can use them.

2) They charge on the same NiMH smart chargers you may use with your other high capacity NiMH AA or AAA rechargeable batteries.

3) The self-discharge of these Low Discharge NiMH batteries is negligible. Their shelf life lasts for months, with 85% of its charge still intact after one year.

We are anticipating 9 Volt Low Discharge NiMH Batteries to be arriving soon.

Thanks for coming by.

The recall became necessary because the rechargeable battery inside the toy can catch fire during charging. The helicopter comes with a transmitter for controlling and and recharging the helicopter. The body of the helicopter is made of foam and plastic, measuring about 6 ½” x 2 ½” inches. The transmitter measures about 4 ½” x 5″ inches. The words “Fun2Fly” and “Microcopter” are printed on the box.

This toy is manufactured in China and was sold at sporting good stores and other retailers nationwide from May to December 2007. The recall says that comsumers should stop using the recalled toy helicopter and return it to the store for a full refund.

If you confused regarding air travel with lithium batteries and lithium-powered devices, you are not alone. There are many articles on the internet reporting different information. Battery forums are full of discussion trying to draw conclusions about what it all means.

There are publications available such as DOT Safe Travel to give us guidelines, but according to information received by Battery Boulevard, it is difficult for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to enforce the new provisions because not only are the restrictions unclear, but there are no regulations in place just yet.

Transportation Security Administration Supervisor Dwayne Pico of Palm Springs International Airport told us today there are no restrictions being enforced regarding Lithium batteries at this time because there is too much confusion about them. TSA has a comprehensive list of restrictions for flight at “What to Know Before You Go”, but Lithium batteries are not found prohibited there yet.

Phil Miller, Officer for the Department of Aeronautics in Northern California confirmed to us that there are no policies or regulations regarding Lithium batteries and airline travel in place at this time.

Once the restrictions are available in clear, common language, it will be easier to draw the line between what and how much Lithium can one fly with.

There is a real and present danger to consider when traveling with Lithium batteries, and it is based on past experiences of dangerous hazards. When a Lithium battery is subjected to strong impact or shocks, it can get hot, ignite, or even explode. Serious accidents, injury and fires have been recorded. Nobody wants to be eight miles up in the air inside an airliner that catches on fire.

Everyone can agree it is good to err on the side of caution when it comes to safety. There are already restrictive provisions regarding sending Lithium batteries through the mail service. One major battery distributor has told us The United States Postal Service no longer ships Lithium batteries. Private carriers such as Federal Express or UPS will ship Lithium batteries, but under strict requirements. The packages must be clearly labeled that they ‘contain Lithium batteries and that they are not to be shipped on passenger airlines’.

Some reports online are leaving many of us confused about exactly what is allowed in flying with Lithium and Lithium-ion batteries. It is reported that under the new rules, one can bring batteries with up to the equivalent of 8-grams of lithium content per person. How are most people going to understand how to determine what 8 grams of Lithium consists of? Most folks are not going to try to figure out how to answer that question. We will be updating you with the answers as they become available.

In the meantime, perhaps you can ship the Lithium batteries ahead of your travel, or buy them at your destination. Be safe!

A rechargeable battery can offer a few advantages that make one wonder why people are still buying alkaline batteries.
A rechargeable battery can provide higher capacity, save you money, deliver convenience, and it is in a more environmentally friendly package. So how difficult can buying a rechargeable battery expected to be?

An important phase is the product selection. Now that you’ve decided to buy and use rechargeable batteries, please do not neglect the importance of this phase because in looking for the quality of product, many people base their decisions on price or possibly misleading information from anything they read from marketing sources.

Buying any product without understanding its quality or value can leave one bitter. Some people turn away and never reconsider using rechargeable batteries again.

Rechargeable batteries are really no different than any other consumer products. They are sold everywhere in stores or on the internet today. There are high quality products that deliver on their promises and claims, giving you a good return for your money, and then there are those products that are of average to poor quality.

Some of these products do alright, but they sometimes fall short of your expectations. There is a vast selection of low quality products which really shouldn’t even be on the market.

Manufacturers sell their rechargeable battery products claiming high or superior performance and great value. There are also countless OEM brands on the market today and their origin is unknown. Safety standards are also very important when deciding what batteries to use. Do you know what you are getting when you spend your money?

The rechargeable battery’s quality can be described as the actual electrical capacity stored in it, and the ability to deliver that electrical capacity when you need it. Its ability to maintain its energy level when it is not being used is also very important. If you understood the basic concept of a rechargeable battery, you would have all the information needed to make a good buying decision. It’s much like filling a gas tank. Twenty gallons of gas will go much farther in a small Honda Civic than it would an eight-cylinder Chevy. There are also thirty-gallon tanks for GMC Vans and there are two-gallon tanks for Harley Davidson Bikes. What do you need for your use? Usually it is best to have a large capacity or storage of energy for longer lasting batteries.

It is also important to know that batteries used for electrical items with non-moving parts (radios, walkmans, digital cameras, etc.) use a different type of battery than the battery-powered toys that require “torque” to move a wheel or drive gears. It is a simple distinction, but we are used to using alkaline batteries in everything and not realizing how much power we can waste because the battery can only be used once.

You deserve to understand just how good a rechargeable battery product is when you buy it. Is it quality? The best quality for you will be the most reliable technology backed by the manufacturer, and knowing what works best for your situation. You’ll avoid dissappointment by not buying a poor performing rechargeable battery, and making sure the charger is called an “inteligent” or “smart charger”. High quality rechargeables give a wonderful sense of control of not only how much money I need to spend in order to operate that camera or the Nintendo Wii remote, but that I can always have plenty of power at my fingertips sitting on the charger.

Nintendo’s Wii is virtually amazing as it brings space and dimension into the living rooms of the world. Interaction with a video screen has risen several notches as the Wii Console gives immediate feedback and allows the virtual experience of actual motion and play.
