Up until the last five years or so most consumers did not pay much attention to one battery from another. The different selections were not available. As technology forges new territory in the land of portable power, it may cause one to stop and do nothing. Why buy when in six months there will be something even better? This is the kind of thinking that takes us out of benefiting what we have now. There are selections that you can make now that will overlap and continue to benefit you greatly as the newer technologies come aboard.

For example, Nickel Metal-Hydride (NiMH) batteries have been around for the last couple of years. They are not going to go “out of style” much as last year’s cell phone model. Battery types and technologies are not that fickle. Especially using formats such as AA, AAA, C-cell, D-cell, 9 Volt, you are going to have use for these batteries for years to come.

As with other kinds of technology, it may appear that all these different battery technological “formats” or chemical makeups may be passing fads. If you decide to notice as different battery chemistries show up on the scene, you will see some more useful than others. There is talk in the halls of higher battery understanding that Lithium-ion batteries are the wave of the future. I believe that is very possible, but they have not arrived in many ways yet. When they do, we will be able to benefit. But we are never going to get to the future until it becomes today.

As far as the conventional AA batteries, AAA batteries, C-size batteries, D-size batteries, and 9 Volts, these formats are here to stay. So you will be able to rest on using these types of NiMH rechargeable batteries for several years to come. They will be replaced some day, but not any time soon.
